I tried to update by Ubuntu to the (yet unreleased) next version. Unfortunately, it seems there’s a bug within the kernel. A bug which means my computer is fucked. I can’t boot fully into an X server, bur I can boot into a terminal. Not everything is lost, luckily.
I used GParted to reparation my disk, so I can install my new distro, and have my old data. However, I’m starting to think that this is a chance to try other versions of Linux. Does anybody have any distro recomendations?
[Update] Repartitioned the drive, installed Ubuntu 8.10, reconfigured X, backed up files. Reinstalled programs, done. ![]()

Xubuntu.
But thats because im surrounded by outdated technology.
You could attempt to build your own, with Linux From Scratch.
Fedora is also ment to be pretty good.
Debian Lenny is pretty neat. I’m getting on well with it.
It’s interesting your friend mention Linux From Scratch. I’m thinking i’ll have a go at that if i ever get a small laptop just for travelling around with me. It could be a good learning experience.
Xubuntu, yeah. Still Ubuntu, just a different face. I prefer GNOME personally.
Lenny seems like possibly a good solution. However, I do feel that Ubuntu is still “Debian done well”.
Perhaps you could stick to Ubuntu?
Its not that bad, is it?
But if your a GNOME fan, Fedora seems a promising thing to look into.
