Radio Soulless

Listerning to my local BBC Radio station (Solent). My granddad loves it, its just what he need. Bit of banter mixed with a bit of music. The current text in question is “How do you like your eggs?”. Well, how do you like your eggs? Current voting, fried is at 60%. On the subject of eggs, what ever happened to eggy bread? One of the many questions that man will never answer.

Review: iTech DAB One

For the last few years, the UK has had DAB Radio. “Crystal Clear and more stations”. Most of these radios look like something out of a bad 1960’s sci-fi movie. Some are ok, made out of wood. Some of them though, are quite nice. There fashionable. Thats the first thing I thought when I saw iTech’s DAB One.

This model was released in 2005, so it doesn’t have all the latest features. It does though have an SD slot (for recording and MP3 playback), FM radio, DAB radio, alarm clock and a line in jack (so you can plug in your iPod). Its initial price was £130, which has now dropped to £35.

The design of the radio looks like something that would have come out of the mind of Apple. It has a click-wheel shaped button device for selecting menus and changing volume. It does not though act like a click-wheel, you have to push the buttons. A bright LCD display shows what stations playing and what tracks is on. There is also a record function and you can set your 5 favorite stations to 5 buttons on the top.

Setting up is simple. Plug in the radio to the power socket or batteries. Press the green button and it scans for stations. The sound is strong very strong. I only have it up to 30% of its volume and its loud enough to be heard all over my room.

All in all, this little radio is a fantastic buy. If you want a stylish DAB, get this!

Old habits die hard

So in 2003/4, there was one thing the ruled my technolust. Radio. Not the old everyday radio, the amateur radio. I was only 13 so all I could use was Walkie Talkies. I spent a week in Dorset with a friend, we both had walkie talkies. I can remember the fun we had tuning into other peoples stations and interrupting there conversations. Ah, sweet nostalgia. But along came the end of 2004 and my radios found there way into the back of my cupboard.

So I was cleaning out my closet and found a radio I won. I remembered how I would go up St Catharine’s Hill, under the call signs “Paul” and “Gecko”, talking to people as far away as Eastleigh. Why not try and re-light that fire? I put in 3 double AA and started scanning the airwaves. I picked up a mans voice on Channel 2 (There are 8 channels). So I get talking.
He’s up on St Catharine’s hill having a bonfire. He’s up-there with 4 friends. Sam (as I later find out his name and age, 26) is up there with Ellen, 21. There trying out there walkie talkies. Ah, now I remember the fun I used to have!

We talked about all sorts of things. From music tastes (punk vs emo) to “The Wasted Lights”. They saw 3 police cars going up to Stanmore, where “I was stationed”. I shared a few tips and we all got on quite well. Hopefully these sort of things will continue with my walkie talkies. Who knows what I might find on the local airwaves?

Pathetic!

Podshow, the oh so mighty podcast empire, only gets 12,000 downloads a day. You would think that DSC or whatever it is, would have 10,000. Oh no, looks like that Podshow has been stuffing socks down its trousers to increase its manhood. Podshow? Smodshow! While you wait for them to sort themselfs out, why not try Keith and the Girl!

Radio Ga Ga

A mate of mine is doing a onlinne radio station. Me and him both did our own about 3 years ago. He has contiuned to do it and I gave up in 2005 and tried podcasting instead. So, if your board and theres nothing good on the telly, try Igloo Online (click here to get it in iTunes)
